Is my water safe to drink?

Blair, NE.
The latest news from Flint Michigan has many people wondering, “is my water safe to drink?” In most cases, yes, the water is safe to drink. But there is always the possibility that you are consuming a laundry list of contaminants that could be detrimental to both you and your family. You could be consuming lead, pesticides, fluoride, bacteria, chlorine and other contaminants on a daily basis.

Should I test my water?
First, if you’re water is coming from a public water supply, your water is most likely clean.  Public water distributors are required to publish an annual Consumer Confidence Report that lists any contaminants they find in their testings. You can find yours on the EPA website by entering your zip code. Even with a public water supplier, it may be a good idea to get your water tested. Homes built prior to 1986 are almost guaranteed to have lead piping. Until 2014, the EPA defined a “lead-free pipe” as having no more than 8% lead. Lead is colorless and tasteless, so it is a good idea to get tested.

If your water comes from a private source, such as a well, then it is your responsibility to test your water and keep it clean. Routine testing is recommended by the EPA as it establishes a record of the water quality which could be useful if someone damages your supply. You can’t be completely sure unless you test it yourself.
